Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

An arm lift is an outpatient procedure and generally does not require significant recovery time.

What is an Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)?

Some patients develop excess skin on their arms due to aging, sun damage, weight loss, or inherited tendencies. Treatment is determined based on the underlying cause of the problem. If excess fat is the primary issue, liposuction alone may suffice. Liposuction can be performed either on a specific area or circumferentially around the arm. However, if the problem is excess skin, a brachioplasty is necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and leaving a scar on the arm.

An important aspect of the surgical plan is to place the incision in the most favorable location, typically hidden when the arm is at your side. The scar usually extends from the armpit to the elbow. As with all plastic surgery incisions, every effort is made to ensure the scar is a thin line. Ultimately, scar quality is heavily dependent on the patient’s natural healing process.

An arm lift is an outpatient procedure and generally does not require significant recovery time. Tapes are typically applied to the incision, and patients may be asked to wear a compression garment or Ace wrap for a few days post-procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to do an arm lift (brachioplasty) without a visible scar?

Patients who have fat in the arm without a lot of extra skin usually do well with liposuction of the arm and do not need a true arm lift (brachioplasty) operation. Younger, healthier skin contracts better after liposuction, so the quality of the skin also plays a part in the quality of the result from liposuction. Patients who have extra skin or a combination of extra skin and fat will require a scar to achieve an improved contour.

Where is the scar from an arm lift located?

The scar is located along the crease on the inside of the arm and usually extends from the armpit down to the elbow. The goal is to have the scar hidden when your arm is at your side.
