Rhinoplasty, or cosmetic surgery of the nose, represents a true blend of the art and science of plastic surgery.

What is Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Rhinoplasty, or cosmetic surgery of the nose, represents a true blend of the art and science of plastic surgery. This procedure can be performed to improve the nose’s appearance, restore its shape after an injury, enhance breathing, or for a combination of these reasons. Given the unique nature of each nose, it is crucial for patients to carefully consider what specific changes they desire. Computer imaging is particularly helpful during rhinoplasty consultations to visualize potential outcomes.

The Incision

Rhinoplasty can be performed through an incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) or entirely through internal incisions, depending on the specific needs and goals of the surgery. Additionally, the nasal septum may be corrected simultaneously to improve breathing in patients with a deviated septum.

Schedule Your Appointment

This outpatient procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia at the surgery center. General anesthesia not only provides maximum comfort but also ensures a secure airway during the surgery, enhancing safety. Following the procedure, most patients will have a nasal splint, a plastic guard on the bridge of their nose, and in some cases, internal splints may be applied. Dr. Kirn and Dr. Al Bayati rarely use nasal packing. The splint generally remains in place for 5 to 7 days post-surgery. Most patients will look presentable to the public within 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my nose be packed after rhinoplasty?

Only in extremely rare situations do Dr. Kirn and Dr. Al Bayati pack the nose. When a septoplasty is performed along with a rhinoplasty, soft silicone rubber splints are placed inside of the nose and remain for 5-7 days after surgery. These splints allow us to avoid the need of nasal packing.

When will I look normal after rhinoplasty?

The external nasal split and dressings will remain for 5-7 days and will be removed, along with any stitches, at the first postoperative visit. Some folks will have bruising, usually under the eyes, which will last another week or so. If there is no bruising, you will look "normal" except for some residual swelling in the nose after the dressings are removed in most cases.

How will we decide how to reshape my nose?

Dr. Kirn and Dr. Al Bayati use a computer imaging system which allows the patient to preview the anticipated surgical changes. Although it is not 100% accurate, and the surgical process is much more complex than just changing the photos on the screen, computer imaging really provides the patient, and the surgeon, an excellent pre-surgical plan. Always during the imaging process we want feedback from the patient to guide each modification.

Will my breathing be affected by rhinoplasty?

If the only reason to modify the nose is for cosmetic purposes, then breathing is rarely affected. However, for patients who have breathing problems, many of those can be addressed at the same time as the cosmetic procedure.

How long does it take to get to the final result after rhinoplasty?

It usually takes a year to reach the final result in rhinoplasty. The long time for maturity is actually an advantage in rhinoplasty since the gradual change makes it more difficult for others to observe the changes as they occur. Most of the change is completed within the first 3-6 months, but the tip usually matures last, which can take up to one year.
