Gynecomastia

The initial step in managing gynecomastia involves a thorough evaluation by a knowledgeable physician to determine if there is an underlying cause that requires treatment.

Male Breast Reduction in Lexington, KY

Gynecomastia is a condition that can affect men of all ages. While it may be caused by hormonal changes, medications, or underlying health conditions, many cases have no apparent cause.

At Kirn Plastic Surgery Center, we provide safe and effective gynecomastia treatment for patients in Lexington, KY. We use advanced techniques to restore a flatter, more masculine chest contour.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia occurs when excess glandular tissue or fat builds up in the male chest. While some cases resolve independently or with medical intervention, many require surgical treatment for lasting improvement.

Male breast reduction may involve:

  • Liposuction for gynecomastia, using Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL) to remove excess fat
  • Glandular tissue removal, through a small incision or “pull-through” technique
  • In more severe cases, excision of excess skin and repositioning of the nipple-areolar complex

The choice of technique depends on the type and extent of tissue involved. We aim to use the least invasive method possible while achieving the best possible result.

Am I a Good Candidate?

You may be a candidate for gynecomastia surgery if you:

  • Have enlarged breasts caused by excess fat or glandular tissue
  • Are at or near a stable, healthy weight
  • Do not have a treatable medical condition causing the enlargement
  • Are in good physical health with realistic expectations
  • Experience discomfort, self-consciousness, or lifestyle limitations due to a full chest fullness

A consultation with Dr. Kirn or Dr. Al Bayati will include a physical exam and a discussion of your goals and options.

What Happens During Surgery?

Male breast reduction surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia and usually takes between one to two hours. If the enlargement is primarily due to fatty tissue, the chest can often be contoured using liposuction through a small incision.

When firm glandular tissue is present, it may need to be surgically removed through a discreet incision, commonly placed along the edge of the areola for minimal visibility. In cases where the skin has stretched or sagged significantly, the procedure may also involve skin excision and repositioning of the nipple-areolar complex to achieve a natural result.

At the end of the procedure, a compression garment is placed to support healing and reduce swelling.

What Is the Recovery Process?

Recovery from male breast reduction is generally straightforward. Most patients experience mild to moderate swelling and soreness, which improve within the first week.

Here’s what to expect:

  • A compression garment is worn for two to four weeks to reduce swelling and support healing
  • Pain is typically manageable with prescribed medication
  • Most patients return to work within three to seven days
  • Light walking is encouraged early on; strenuous activity and chest exercises should be avoided for at least three to four weeks
  • Follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor healing and address any concerns

We’ll provide complete post-operative instructions during your visit.

Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

Many patients choose gynecomastia surgery for both physical and emotional reasons. Common benefits include:

  • A flatter, firmer chest appearance
  • Improved body proportions and posture
  • Freedom to wear fitted clothing or go shirtless
  • Relief from tenderness, skin irritation, or tightness
  • Discreet scarring using advanced, tissue-sparing techniques
